Welcome
Welcome
Welcome to the site!
The Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse (CRiVA) at Durham University has been at the forefront of violence and abuse research since June 2013. One area of expertise in the centre is work on domestic abuse and lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT+) communities. Our research into LGBT+ domestic abuse addresses critical gaps in understanding and supporting LGBT+ individuals experiencing domestic abuse.
Why this website was developed
This website was developed for two main reasons. First, to be a record of our LGBT+ History Project event, held to coincide with LGBT History Month 2025 and its focus on ‘Activism and Social Change’. Our event was organised to mark twenty years since the first specialist LGBT+ domestic abuse service opened in Britain and to create an agenda for change for the next 20 years. Second, to be a resource for anybody wanting to find out more about LGBT+ domestic abuse.
Who the website is for
This site is designed for:
- Anyone with an interest in LGBT+ domestic abuse, including people who are seeking information on specialist LGBT+ domestic abuse services
- Practitioners, policymakers and commissioners developing or delivering LGBT+ services
- Researchers studying LGBT+ domestic abuse
- Students and practitioners interested in developing more inclusive services
This website is about research, policy and practice on LGBT+ domestic abuse – if you are a victim/survivor, supporter or practitioner looking for advice or guidance, please contact Galop’s National Helpline for LGBT+ Victims and Survivors of Abuse and Violence on 0800 999 5428 or click here.
